I've seen her for a few but when she feels her stomach start to churn her fear of vomiting triggers fear and panic. She feels like she has to escape, which causes more upset and feeling of being out of control. In order to help her I needed to have more information. She explained that she felt upset in her stomach and then she started worrying about throwing up. It got so bad that she had to leave, just incase she needed to throw up. Whenever I hear someone having problem with panic, I know negative thoughts are somewhere in the background. These harmful thoughts usually start with the words, "What if." These messages add to the distress and cause even more fear and panic. I asked her was going through her mind, right before she had the panic attack. She thought for a moment and said, I was thinking, "what if I can't stop it," "what if I throw up," "what if I can't get out soon enough." Those thoughts stimulated her unconscious mind to start the flight/ fight process. This led to more physical symptoms that fed her fear, creating more "what if" thoughts. These kept running through her mind until she left the situation. Then she felt bad about having to leave. And the whole cycle of self-blame added even more distress. There were a number of steps we used to help her to feel back in control. Today I'll talk about 6 tips I gave her to use. There are NLP and self-hypnotic techniques that can also be learned, and I'll talk about them in another article. The following tips make use of the power of "thoughts". They work in the thinking or conscious part of her mind. These skills are important to learning while waiting to clear up the root of the problem using hypnotic techniques. Tips for relief of panic and nausea. 1st think about the successful 2 weeks of feeling so much better. People with panic are really good at blaming themselves. It is important to recognize success as well. 2nd Use an "anchor." The smell of peppermint can triggers a feeling of calm. This was set into her unconscious in our previous session. You can use any scent, and even without setting it into the unconscious it can trigger calm. The more you use it the better it works to create calm. 3rd As you smell the peppermint (or other scent) say, "that feels better." The unconscious mind hears the message and begins to follow the suggestion. 4th Add other positive thoughts: For her we used, "Peppermint soothes the stomach." Just hearing this suggesting sets up a positive feeling 5th Whenever feeling queasy you can admit that, "although this queasy feeling is awful, nothing happened the last time you felt this way." This is a true statement, last time she thought she'd throw up her stomach did settle down. 6th Put these statements on index cards. In the middle of panic the mind isn't working at its best. Just take the cards out and read them. Then next time she comes in for an appointment, we'll continue to use NLP and hypnotic techniques get to the root of this fear. Then she won't have to work so hard on the thoughts. Learning how to create positive images and thoughts will help to change reactions.
